Essential Outsiders: Chinese and Jews in the Modern Transformation of Southeast Asia and Central Europe (Jackson School Publications in International Studies)
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (September, 1997)
Average review score:

a history book with empathydelving into the successes brought on by the most eminent enterpreneurial minorities, daniel chirot and anthony reid compile interesting accounts of the hardships faced by the chinese and jews settling in foreign communities. consequently, the editors offer a book which is more than a tedious and detailed narrative; rather, chirot and reid give a rich, sensitive and sympathetic blend of history and personal stories, portraying these "outsiders" with the respect they richly deserve.

Essentials of Underwater Photography
Published in Hardcover by Best Publishing Company (May, 2000)
Average review score:

Great underwater photography handbookGreat reference book on essentials of underwater photography. Compact enough to take with you on your next photo dive in far away places. I especially enjoyed the quick look-up charts on filters, f-stop, strobes and films. Great for beginners, and for those of us that may need a refresher before going for a photo dive after a few years absence.
There is a great discussion on equiptment that is a must read before buying new underwater photographic gear. Beyond being a great reference, Mr. Jackson has supplied us with some wonderful photos (with settings). This is a great gift for the underwater enthusiast as well as yourself.

Eugene "Pineapple" Jackson: His Own Story
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (February, 1999)
Average review score:

African Americans in Show "bis" in the1900s the real deal.I was transcended in solid thought while reading this book from beginning to end. It is colorfully written and provides a wealth of information and advice on the African American struggles and good times during the early 1900s in the world of show business. If you really want to learn first hand about real show business during the 1900s, then and now, get it from the horse's mouth. Eugene "Pineapple" Jackson is the horse. He was there as a professional actor when it all started in the early 1900's and has hung in there through the late 1990s. His autobiography with co-author Gwendolyn Sides St. Julian gives you the colorful truth of the beauty and struggles in show business. It is a must reading for those who wish to enter show business or those who are already in show business, and feel that they have made it.

Evolution for Naturalists: The Simple Principles and Complex Reality
Published in Textbook Binding by John Wiley & Sons (December, 1980)
Average review score:

if you can find it, buy itThis, Phil Darlington's last book, is an eloquent "summing up" of many of the principles of Natural Selection and evolution as presented by one of the titans of the Great Age of Biogeography. Darlington was born into an age of fixed, stable continents & lived to see his entire world view overthrown by Continental Drift, yet he seems to see this upheaval as an enormous relief -one that took care of many troubling inconsistencies that had bothered him as a biologist. In E. For N. he turns his writing skills to showing how Darwin & Wallace's theory can help make sense of an enormous range of issues in ecology and natural history. The final chapter, which revolves around the then-very-new Sociobiology controversy is a remarkably gentle but authoritative call for both sides to stop bickering and get on with doing science. It is a shame that this book is out of print & it is well worth your time if you are interested in evolutionary biology from the perspective of someone who revelled in "facts on the ground" and lucky enough to stumble upon it.

The Evolving Landscape: Homer Aschmann's Geography
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (April, 1997)
Average review score:

A tough master geographer with towering insight. This is a compilation by a geographer of another geographer's best writings. They aren't minting the Homer Aschmann type anymore, and we are much the poorer in consequence. His insights into landscape evolution are informed, unflinching and always reflect a staggering intellect. J.B. Jackson's Foreword places Aschmann in the pantheon of the best observers of the land the US has managed to produce.

Faces of Freedom Summer: The Photographs of Herbert Randall
Published in Hardcover by Univ. of Alabama Press (January, 2001)
Average review score:

Treasure Hidden 35 YearsOnly five of the 1800 photos from which these were selected had been printed before. The photographer had put them away, after spending a summer in Mississippi, with a Whitney grant. As an artist, the time had never been ripe to look at them again. This is the only record of a single town in the midst of the Civil Rights revolution in America. It is the record of the largest project in Mississippi, which was overlooked and unpublicised at the time, probably for reasons of personal conflict & sexism. It is also a moment in the civil rights revolution preserved with the sensibilities of a participant, who is African-American & American Indian. It is a loving but never sentimental look at the people of the town in the midst of change, and of the young white college students & middle-aged, middle class African-American professionals who volunteered their services in aid of that revolutionary movement. One bookseller has called the introduction to the photographs "the best I have ever read." It is a good introductory history for the majority of this country who were born after that time. And it is a very beautiful book.

Fantasy
Published in Paperback by Routledge Kegan & Paul (March, 1981)
Average review score:

Totally fantastic! This is one of my favorite theory books, not too heavy handed and some really thoughtful work. I just loved it, espically Dr. Jackson's ideas about the Faust and Frankenstien legands. Anyone who's looking for something to start with regarding the fantasy and horror genres should really pick this one up. It's really great!

Extremely informative, for old and new CatholicsI read this book for the first time back in 1965-1966. I have shared this book with several of my catholic friends who found the book to be exqusided. I have the May 1953 editition. Naturally I had to order the revised edition. Since reading the new edition I find it very, very informative. and I highly recommend it be read by all old and new Catholics. It will answer many if not most of the questions you have about the Catholic Faith. God Bless You!

A bundle of humourous and thought provoking phrasesStatements like 'Behold the tortoise, he only makes progress when he sticks his neck out!' and more give the reader food for thought with a little humour in a world where everything is safe and how it should be. Read this, and maybe you will gain the inspiration to try something different, something outrageous, something courageous.
